Motorcycle Insurance in California

Motorcycle Insurance in California

More riders share California's roads than any state in the country, and it is the only state where lane splitting is fully legal. Coverage that fits that reality starts with one call.

Why Local Coverage Matters

California raised its minimum insurance limits in 2025, requires helmets for every rider, and legally recognizes lane splitting. That combination exists nowhere else, and it shapes what a smart rider policy looks like. Suncoast matches California riders with motorcycle insurance that fits both the law and the bike.

California Motorcycle Insurance Requirements

Motorcycles follow the same minimum liability requirements as cars in California, which increased on January 1, 2025:
$30,000
bodily injury liability per person
$60,000
bodily injury liability per accident
$15,000
property damage liability per accident
You will often see this written as 30/60/15. If your policy predates 2025, confirm your limits meet the new floor.
Proof of insurance
Carry evidence of insurance and show it at traffic stops, after accidents, and at registration. Insurers report coverage electronically to the California DMV.
Penalties for driving uninsured
A base fine plus court penalty assessments that multiply the real cost, possible impoundment, and a DMV registration suspension if a lapse is reported on a registered bike.

Coverage Options Beyond the Minimum

Liability protects everyone else. These can protect you, the bike, and your accessories.
Higher liability limits
Raise what your policy can pay for injuries and damage you cause. On California freeways, the 2025 minimums can still disappear fast.
Collision coverage
Helps pay to repair or replace your bike after a covered crash, regardless of fault.
Comprehensive coverage
Helps with covered non-crash losses such as theft, vandalism, and fire. California leads the nation in motorcycle theft, concentrated in the LA and Bay Area metros, which makes this coverage worth pricing for most riders.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
Is the big one on two wheels. When an uninsured driver hits a rider, the rider absorbs the injuries, and this coverage can help pay for them.

How We Help

How Much Does Motorcycle Insurance Cost in California?

Your rate depends on your riding record, years licensed, bike type and value, annual mileage, coverage choices, and deductibles. Where you ride matters.

One call turns those factors into a number: (877) 240-4678.
Los Angeles
Dense traffic and the state's worst motorcycle theft numbers put premiums at the top of the range.
San Francisco Bay Area
High theft and repair costs keep comprehensive pricing up.
San Diego
Typically friendlier than LA with year-round riding.
Sacramento and the Central Valley
Often lands near the state midpoint.
Coastal and mountain counties
Lighter traffic, more seasonal riding, generally lower rates.

Ways to Save on California Motorcycle Insurance

A CHP-approved motorcycle safety course earns discounts with most carriers (and is required for riders under 21 to get licensed). Higher deductibles trade premium for out-of-pocket on covered claims. Continuous coverage avoids lapse surcharges. Bundling with auto adds a multi-policy discount, and ask about mature rider, multi-bike, anti-theft device, and garaging discounts, which matter in high-theft ZIP codes.

Financing Your Bike? Read This First

If you finance, your lender will almost always require collision and comprehensive coverage beyond minimum liability. Ask about GAP coverage too. It can help pay the difference between the loan balance and the bike's value if it is totaled or stolen, and motorcycles depreciate quickly enough to make that gap real.

Riding Legal in California: Helmets, Lane Splitting, and Registration

Helmet law: universal. Every rider and passenger must wear a DOT-compliant helmet, regardless of age or experience.

Lane splitting: legal. California is the only state that permits riding between lanes of moving traffic, formalized in 2016. The CHP publishes safety guidance, and insurers still evaluate fault normally in a lane splitting accident, so ride it conservatively.

License: you need an M1 endorsement from the California DMV. Riders under 21 must complete the CHP motorcyclist training course first.

Registration:
motorcycles register through the California DMV with proof of insurance meeting 30/60/15, registration and license fees, and smog rules that exempt most motorcycles from testing. A reported lapse can suspend the registration by itself.

Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers.

What are the motorcycle insurance requirements in California?
The same as cars: minimum liability of $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage (30/60/15), in effect since January 1, 2025.
Do you have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle in California?
Yes. California has a universal helmet law: every rider and passenger must wear a DOT-compliant helmet at all times, regardless of age.
Is lane splitting legal in California?
Yes. California is the only U.S. state where lane splitting between moving vehicles is fully legal. Fault in a lane splitting accident is still evaluated case by case, so cautious splitting protects both your safety and your claim.
How much is motorcycle insurance in California?
Typically far less than car insurance, but LA and Bay Area theft rates push comprehensive costs up, and sport bikes cost more than cruisers. Your record, bike, coverage choices, and ZIP code set the number. A quick call gets you an exact quote.
Does California require motorcycles to pass a smog check?
No. Motorcycles are currently exempt from California's smog check program, though they still must be registered with the DMV and carry proof of insurance.
Can I get California motorcycle insurance with a ticket or SR-22 requirement?
Often, yes, though eligibility and pricing depend on your record and each carrier's guidelines. Suncoast quotes carriers that specialize in riders with marks on their record, and a licensed agent can handle the SR-22 filing as part of your policy.
