Motorcycle Insurance in Colorado

Motorcycle Insurance in Colorado

Canyon carving in July, garage queen in January. Colorado riding is seasonal, and your insurance strategy should know it.

Why Local Coverage Matters

Colorado legalized lane filtering in 2024, leaves helmets optional for adults, and throws hail at anything parked outside. Suncoast matches Colorado riders with motorcycle insurance built for a riding season with real weather on both ends.

California Motorcycle Insurance Requirements

Motorcycles carry the same minimum liability requirements as cars in Colorado:
$25,000
bodily injury liability per person
$50,000
bodily injury liability per accident
$15,000
property damage liability per accident
Insurers must also offer uninsured/underinsured motorist and medical payments coverage, which you may decline in writing. For riders, both are worth a hard look before declining.
Proof of insurance
Carry proof on the bike (paper or digital). Colorado verifies coverage through the state's electronic insurance database at registration and traffic stops.
Penalties for driving uninsured
A minimum $500 fine, four license points, and suspension until you show proof, with minimum $1,000 fines for repeat offenses.

Coverage Options Beyond the Minimum

Liability protects everyone else. These can protect you, the bike, and your accessories.
Higher liability limits
Raise what your policy can pay for injuries and damage you cause to others, worth considering on crowded canyon roads and I-70 weekends.
Collision coverage
Helps pay to repair or replace your bike after a covered crash, regardless of fault, including gravel-in-the-corner single vehicle slides.
Comprehensive coverage
Helps with covered non-crash losses: hail (a Colorado specialty, and a parked bike has no garage door on the road), theft, vandalism, and animal strikes.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
Can help pay for your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. On a bike, the injuries land on you, which is why Colorado requires insurers to offer it.

How We Help

How Much Does Motorcycle Insurance Cost in Colorado?

Your rate reflects your riding record, age, bike type and value, coverage choices, deductibles, and ZIP code, with the season baked into annual pricing,

A five minute call gets you an actual number: (877) 240-4678.
Denver metro
The state's highest theft rates and traffic density mean premiums above the state average.
Colorado Springs
Typically a step below Denver.
Fort Collins and the northern Front Range
Usually moderate.
Grand Junction and the Western Slope
Often the friendliest pricing, with long riding seasons on the warm side of the mountains.
Mountain towns
Short seasons and wildlife exposure cut both ways.

Ways to Save on Colorado Motorcycle Insurance

A motorcycle safety course (MOST-approved) earns discounts with most carriers. Higher deductibles lower premiums in exchange for more out of pocket on covered claims. Rather than canceling coverage every winter (which creates a lapse and costs more later), ask about keeping comprehensive in place year-round so the bike stays protected against theft and hail in storage while you save on the coverages you pause. Bundling with auto adds a multi-policy discount, and ask about mature rider, multi-bike, and anti-theft discounts.

Financing Your Bike? Read This First

If you finance, your lender will almost always require collision and comprehensive coverage beyond minimum liability. Ask about GAP coverage too. It can help pay the difference between the loan balance and the bike's value if it is totaled or stolen, and a hailstorm can total a parked motorcycle.

Riding Legal in Colorado: Helmets, Lane Filtering, and Registration

Helmet law: riders and passengers under 18 must wear a DOT-compliant helmet. Adults choose for themselves, but eye protection is required for everyone.

Lane filtering:
legal since August 2024, within limits: you may pass between stopped vehicles when traffic is fully stopped, at 15 mph or less, when conditions allow it safely. The law carries a sunset provision scheduled for September 2027 unless the legislature extends it, so check current status each season.

License:
you need an M endorsement from the Colorado DMV, earned by exam or an approved safety course.

Registration:
motorcycles register through your county motor vehicle office with proof of insurance meeting 25/50/15, registration fees, and ownership tax based on the bike's age and value.

Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers.

Is motorcycle insurance required in Colorado?
Yes. Motorcycles carry the same minimum liability requirements as cars: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage (25/50/15).
Do you have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle in Colorado?
Only riders and passengers under 18 must wear a helmet. Eye protection is required for all riders regardless of age.
Is lane filtering legal in Colorado?
Yes, since August 2024. You may pass between fully stopped vehicles at 15 mph or less when it is safe to do so. The law is scheduled to sunset in September 2027 unless extended, and filtering between moving vehicles remains illegal.
How much is motorcycle insurance in Colorado?
Usually much less than car insurance. Your bike, record, coverage choices, and ZIP code set the price, with Denver metro theft rates pushing comprehensive costs up. A quick call gets you an exact number.
Should I cancel my motorcycle insurance for the winter?
A full cancellation creates a coverage lapse that raises future rates and leaves the bike unprotected against theft and hail in storage. Many riders instead keep comprehensive year-round and adjust other coverages. Ask an agent to price both approaches.
Can I get Colorado motorcycle insurance with a ticket or SR-22 requirement?
Often, yes, though eligibility and pricing depend on your record and each carrier's guidelines. Suncoast quotes carriers that specialize in riders with marks on their record, and a licensed agent can handle the SR-22 filing as part of your policy.
