Motorcycle Insurance in Utah

Motorcycle Insurance in Utah

Utah wrote the playbook on lane filtering and runs a no-fault system that treats bikes differently than cars. Riding here comes with its own rules, and its own coverage logic.

Why Local Coverage Matters

Utah's no-fault law puts $3,000 of PIP medical coverage on every car policy, but motorcycles are exempt, so the default Utah rider policy carries no medical coverage at all. Add the state's pioneering lane filtering law and an under-21 helmet rule, and Utah riding has a rulebook of its own. Suncoast builds motorcycle insurance around it.

Utah Motorcycle Insurance Requirements

Motorcycles carry the same minimum liability limits as cars in Utah:
$25,000
bodily injury liability per person
$65,000
bodily injury liability per accident
$15,000
property damage liability per accident
An $80,000 combined single limit can satisfy the requirement instead.

The no-fault difference: Utah requires $3,000 of personal injury protection on car policies, but motorcycles are exempt from PIP. That means no automatic medical coverage on a base rider policy, and it also changes how injury claims work after an accident. Adding medical payments coverage closes the gap.
Proof of insurance:
Carry proof on the bike. Utah's Uninsured Motorist Identification Database matches every registered vehicle against an active policy.
Penalties for riding uninsured:
A minimum $400 fine for a first offense, minimum $1,000 for repeats within three years, plus license suspension and possible SR-22 requirements.

Coverage Options Beyond the Minimum

Liability protects everyone else. These can protect you, the bike, and your accessories.
Medical payments coverage
Leads the list in Utah because riders are exempt from the PIP that covers drivers. It can help pay medical bills for you and a passenger after a covered accident, regardless of fault.
Higher liability limits
Raise what your policy can pay for injuries and damage you cause to others.
Collision coverage
Helps pay to repair or replace your bike after a covered crash, regardless of fault, including canyon slide-offs with no other vehicle involved.
Comprehensive coverage
Helps with covered non-crash losses such as theft, hail, and deer strikes on mountain roads.

How We Help

How Much Does Motorcycle Insurance Cost in Utah?

Your rate depends on your riding record, age, bike type and value, coverage choices, deductibles, and ZIP code.

A five minute call gets you an actual number: (877) 240-4678.
Salt Lake City
The state's densest traffic and highest claim frequency mean premiums above the state average.
West Valley City and the west side
At or above Salt Lake proper.
Provo and Orem
Typically more accessible, with a younger rider mix.
Ogden
Near the state midpoint.
St. George
Southern Utah's long riding season with generally lower premiums.

Ways to Save on Utah Motorcycle Insurance

A motorcycle safety course earns discounts with most carriers and can substitute for the DMV skills test. Higher deductibles lower premiums in exchange for more out of pocket on covered claims. Continuous coverage avoids lapse surcharges and keeps the state database from flagging your registration; for winter storage, ask about adjusting coverage instead of canceling. Bundling with auto adds a multi-policy discount, and ask about mature rider, multi-bike, and anti-theft discounts.

Financing Your Bike? Read This First

If you finance, your lender will almost always require collision and comprehensive coverage beyond minimum liability. Ask about GAP coverage too. It can help pay the difference between the loan balance and the bike's value if it is totaled or stolen.

Riding Legal in Utah: Helmets, Lane Filtering, and Registration

Helmet law: riders and passengers under 21 must wear a DOT-compliant helmet. Riders 21 and over choose for themselves.

Lane filtering: legal since 2019, and Utah was the modern pioneer. You may filter between stopped vehicles on roads with two or more lanes in your direction and a posted limit of 45 mph or less, riding no faster than 15 mph. Filtering between moving cars and on faster roads remains illegal.

License: you need a motorcycle endorsement from the Utah DMV, earned by skills test or an approved rider education course.

Registration: motorcycles register through the Utah DMV (State Tax Commission) with proof of insurance meeting 25/65/15, registration fees, and the age-based uniform fee. Motorcycles are generally exempt from the county emissions programs that cover cars. The state insurance database checks coverage continuously, so a lapse can suspend the registration on its own.

Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers.

Is motorcycle insurance required in Utah?
Yes. Motorcycles need the same liability minimums as cars: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $65,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage (25/65/15), or an $80,000 combined single limit.
Does Utah's no-fault PIP apply to motorcycles?
No. Motorcycles are exempt from Utah's $3,000 PIP requirement, so a base rider policy includes no medical coverage for you. Many riders add medical payments coverage to close that gap.
Is lane filtering legal in Utah?
Yes, since 2019. You may pass between stopped vehicles on roads with two or more same-direction lanes posted at 45 mph or less, riding no faster than 15 mph. Filtering between moving vehicles is illegal.
Do you have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle in Utah?
Riders and passengers under 21 must wear a DOT-compliant helmet. Riders 21 and over choose for themselves.
How much is motorcycle insurance in Utah?
Usually far less than car insurance. Salt Lake City runs above the state average, St. George and Ogden lower. Your bike, record, coverage choices, and deductibles set the number. A quick call gets you an exact quote.
Can I get Utah motorcycle insurance with a ticket or SR-22 requirement?
Often, yes, though eligibility and pricing depend on your record and each carrier's guidelines. Utah requires SR-22 filings after certain suspensions. Suncoast quotes carriers that specialize in riders with marks on their record, and a licensed agent can handle the filing.
