RV Insurance in California

Pismo's coastal campgrounds, Palm Springs resorts, and Sierra passes that close in October. California RV life covers a lot of map, and your coverage should keep up with all of it.

Why Local Coverage Matters

California raised its auto liability minimums in 2025, and motorhomes came along for the ride. Add wildfire exposure at storage lots, high vehicle values, and metro theft rates, and California RV coverage has more moving parts than most states. Suncoast matches California RVers with RV insurance that fits the way the rig lives here.

Is RV Insurance Required in California?

Motorhomes (Class A, B, and C) are motor vehicles under California law and must carry the minimums that took effect January 1, 2025: $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage (30/60/15). Travel trailers and fifth wheels carry no separate state liability requirement; your tow vehicle's liability generally extends while towing. But the extension does not cover damage to the trailer itself, so lenders require physical damage coverage on financed trailers, and many California RV parks and resorts require proof of coverage.

What Can California RV Insurance Include?

There are many ways to build an RV policy.
Liability coverage
helps pay for injuries and property damage you cause while operating a motorhome, and satisfies California's 30/60/15 requirement.
Collision coverage
helps pay to repair or replace your RV after a covered accident, regardless of fault, including the tight-campground scrapes that account for a surprising share of RV claims.
Comprehensive coverage
helps with covered non-collision losses: theft, vandalism, fire, and falling limbs. With wildfire in the picture, this is the coverage conversation California RV owners should not skip.
Personal belongings protection
can help cover electronics, kitchen gear, bikes, and camping equipment inside the rig.

How We Help

How Much Does RV Insurance Cost in California?

Rates depend on the RV's class and value, usage, storage location, your record, coverage choices, and deductibles.

A five minute call gets you an actual number: (877) 240-4678.
Los Angeles and Orange County
the state's highest storage and theft exposure, and premiums to match.
San Diego
big RV market with year-round use.
Inland Empire and Palm Springs
desert resort country, with summer storage patterns.
Central Coast (Pismo, Morro Bay)
classic coastal campground use.
Sacramento, the Valley, and the Sierra gateways
moderate pricing with seasonal mountain use.

Ways to Save on California RV Insurance

Storage options can trim the premium during months the rig sits, while keeping fire and theft protection active (worth keeping in wildfire country). Safe driver discounts reward a clean record, bundling RV with auto or home stacks multi-policy savings, and paid-in-full and paperless options can add more. Higher deductibles lower premium in exchange for more out of pocket on covered claims.

Financing Your RV? Read This First

Lenders almost always require collision and comprehensive coverage on a financed RV. Ask about total loss replacement or GAP coverage too. California rigs carry high price tags, they depreciate fast, and the valuation method your policy uses (agreed value, replacement, or actual cash value) decides what a total loss actually pays.

Registering an RV in California

Motorhomes and trailers register with the California DMV, with proof of insurance required for motorhomes and registration plus vehicle license fees based on value.

Most motorhomes are subject to smog check requirements (unlike trailers, which have none), and permanent trailer identification applies to travel trailers. A reported insurance lapse on a motorhome can suspend its registration on its own.

Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers.

Is RV insurance required in California?
Motorhomes must carry California's minimum liability insurance, 30/60/15 since January 1, 2025. Towed trailers have no separate state liability requirement, but lenders and many parks require coverage on the trailer itself.
What does RV insurance cover in California?
Depending on the policy: liability for injuries and damage you cause, collision, comprehensive (theft, fire, and weather), personal belongings protection, vacation liability at the campsite, and add-ons like roadside assistance. Specifics vary by carrier and policy.
How much is RV insurance in California?
It depends on the rig, usage, storage location, your record, and coverage choices. A Class A stored in LA prices differently than a travel trailer in Morro Bay. A quick call gets you an exact number.
Does RV insurance cover wildfire damage in California?
Fire is generally a comprehensive coverage event, whether the rig is parked at home, in storage, or at a campsite. Coverage specifics and any moratorium rules during active fires vary by carrier, so review the details with an agent before fire season.
Does RV insurance cover full-time living?
Not at Suncoast. Our RV policies are built for recreational use: weekend trips, vacations, and seasonal travel. If your RV is your primary residence, you will need a specialized full-timer policy from a carrier that offers one, which we do not currently quote.
Does RV insurance cover water damage or roof leaks?
It depends on the cause. Sudden covered events, like storm damage that opens the roof, generally fall under comprehensive coverage. Gradual leaks, seepage, and delamination from deferred maintenance are typically excluded, which is why roof care matters. An agent can walk through how a policy treats each scenario.
