Boat Insurance in California

Eight hundred forty miles of coast, the Delta, Tahoe, and Shasta. California boating covers more kinds of water than any state, and your coverage should match yours.

Why Local Coverage Matters

California does not require boat insurance by law, but it now requires every operator to carry a Boater Card, and its marinas almost universally require liability proof for a slip. Suncoast matches California boaters with boat insurance that fits saltwater, freshwater, and everything the Delta throws in between.

Is Boat Insurance Required in California?

California law does not require insurance to register or operate a recreational vessel. In practice, coverage gets required from other directions: marinas typically demand liability proof for slip and mooring agreements, lenders require physical damage coverage on financed boats, and yacht clubs and racing organizations set their own minimums. The exposure is real either way. A homeowners policy typically carries only small watercraft limits, and salt water, busy harbors, and six-figure vessels make an uncovered loss expensive.

What Can California Boat Insurance Include?

There are many ways to build a boat policy.
Liability coverage
can help pay for injuries and property damage you cause with your boat, including dock and marina damage where repair bills climb fast.
Physical damage (hull) coverage
helps pay to repair or replace your boat after covered events, afloat, moored, or on the trailer.
Uninsured boater coverage
can help with your injuries when the at-fault boater carries nothing, which happens in a state where insurance is optional.
Medical payments coverage
can help with medical bills for you and your passengers after a covered accident, regardless of fault.

How We Help

How Much Does Boat Insurance Cost in California?

Rates depend on the vessel's type, value, and length, saltwater vs. freshwater use, where it is moored or stored, your record, coverage choices, and deductibles.

A five minute call gets you an actual number: (877) 240-4678.
Southern California coast (Newport, San Diego, Marina del Rey)
high vessel values and year-round salt exposure set the top of the range.
San Francisco Bay and the Delta
busy water, tidal conditions, and liveaboard considerations factor in.
Lake Tahoe
high-value boats, a short season, and inspection requirements shape pricing.
Shasta and the northern lakes
houseboats and seasonal use bring their own numbers.
Inland valley lakes
typically the friendliest pricing in the state.

Ways to Save on California Boat Insurance

Your California Boater Card and any additional safety coursework may earn discounts. Higher deductibles lower premiums in exchange for more out of pocket on covered claims. Lay-up periods can cut costs for seasonal lake boats and ask about credits for secure storage and claims-free records.

Financing a Boat? Agreed Value vs. Actual Cash Value

Lenders almost always require physical damage coverage on a financed vessel. Ask whether your policy pays agreed value (a locked-in amount) or actual cash value (market value minus depreciation at the time of loss). On depreciating hulls, that choice decides what a total loss actually pays, and on higher-value coastal boats the difference can be substantial.

California Boat Registration and Rules

Vessels in California register with the DMV, the same agency that handles cars, with registration required for motorized vessels and sailboats over eight feet. Fees and biennial renewals apply, and county tax assessors levy property tax on vessels.

The big rule change: as of January 1, 2025, every operator of a motorized vessel, regardless of age, must carry a California Boater Card from the Division of Boating and Waterways. Life jacket requirements apply to every vessel, children under 13 must wear one while underway on a moving vessel, and boating under the influence carries the same 0.08 standard as driving. Lake Tahoe and other waters also require invasive species inspections before launch.

Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers.

Is boat insurance required in California?
No state law requires it, but marinas almost universally require liability proof for slips, lenders require coverage on financed vessels, and clubs and race organizers set their own minimums. Most California boaters carry a dedicated policy.
Do I need a license to drive a boat in California?
You need a California Boater Card. As of January 1, 2025 the requirement covers every operator of a motorized vessel regardless of age, issued by the Division of Boating and Waterways after a boating safety course.
How much is boat insurance in California?
It depends on the vessel, where you keep it, saltwater or freshwater use, your record, and coverage choices. A coastal cruiser in Newport prices differently than a ski boat on a valley lake. A quick call gets you an exact number.
Do I have to register my boat in California?
Yes. Motorized vessels and sailboats over eight feet register with the California DMV, with biennial renewal. Vessels are also subject to county property tax.
Does my homeowners insurance cover my boat?
Usually only in a very limited way, with small caps and little to no on-water liability. A dedicated boat policy exists to fill that gap, and marina slip agreements generally will not accept homeowners coverage as proof.
Does boat insurance cover salt water use?
Policies can cover coastal and offshore use, but navigational limits vary by policy, and some inland-boat policies exclude salt water. Tell your agent exactly where you run the boat so the territory matches.
